Installaion View of Culls with Crew Quilt and
Treeplanting Words. Kelowna Art Gallery. 2006.

The piece entitled Crew Quilt is comprised of portraits of fellow tree planters transferred onto square material cut from men’s work shirts, and stitched onto a wool blanket backing. I wanted to draw the connection between the feeling of commaraderie and closeness I shared with members of my crew, while simultaneously feeling too close to them and the desire to escape from this community. In many ways, a planting crew becomes sewn together through its experience as a collective working towards the goal of finishing a block or suffering through a bad contract. This piece is an attempt to reflect that dichotomy.
